Kalmo – Marjaana [Lyrics Video]
Taken from the album: Gehinnom | Sliptrick Records | 2021
Video art and animations were created by Arto Törmänen

Marjaana is a Finnish version of an old traditional song, based on the 17th century ballad Sweet William’s Ghost, and now twisted, Kalmo-style. While the original structure of the music has been somewhat preserved, the lyrics and the tone of the song have been kalmonised. The yen to make his own version of this song had been whispering in the back of his mind for some time. The track is taken from Kalmo’s soon-to-be-released second album Gehinnom. The music video takes the form of an animation, with lyrics both in Finnish and English and the grim artwork telling the tragic story.

“A small hut at the edge of the looming forest. A pale light gleams from the window. The blackening sky summons the creatures of the night from the deep. The darkest of the darkest shadow moves across the land, looking for the soul bound by an oath given a long ago. Heavy steps bring the creature to the doorstep. The moment of payback is at hand. Wishes are granted and promises kept – at a high price. Marjaana finds her doom in the promise given. Death will collect his debt.”
